 The design for this gut renovation of a nineteenth-century worker’s cottage in Newburyport enriches the historic form of an iconic “monopoly house” with contemporary interventions that open the space - up into the attic and out onto the yard.
       
     
 A new deck expands the first floor public spaces out into the yard, adding an outdoor room for entertaining and play.
       
     
 Extensive demolition of interior walls, and the replacement of an old, unsafe chimney with a new see-through fireplace, allows the entire first floor to flow together as a coherent space.  
       
     
 This open space is  punctuated by built-in bamboo furniture components. . A desk between the kitchen and dining area allows adults to work without losing track of the kids outside, And a large window seat provides elegant, space-saving seating
       
     
 A new attic dormer added across the rear of the house makes space for a playroom for kids, as well as a guest bedroom for visiting grandparents.
